There is a particular kind of light that only happens at Mahabalipuram in the last hour before dusk — warm, low, and unhurried. It was in that light that Aishwarya and Karthik were married, on a stretch of shore just past the Shore Temple, with both families standing barefoot in the sand.

Weddings that blend two traditions ask something particular of the people documenting them: patience. There is no single ceremony to plan around, no single rhythm to anticipate. Aishwarya's family carried their Tamil customs; Karthik's, their Telugu ones. Our job was simply to be present for both, unhurried, and to let each unfold on its own terms.

The quiet before the ceremony

Long before the guests arrived, Aishwarya sat with her mother and grandmother while they finished her jewellery. Nobody spoke much. It's in rooms like this — not the mandapam, not the reception — that we find the photographs that matter most years later.

“We didn't want a wedding film that looked like everyone else's. We wanted ours — the real sound of the waves, our actual voices, not a voiceover.”

By the time the couple exchanged garlands, the tide had come almost all the way in. Guests lifted their sarees and shoes and kept dancing anyway. Years from now, Aishwarya and Karthik won't remember the seating chart or the schedule. They'll remember the light, the water, and the sound of everyone they love in one place. That's what we came to capture — and that's what we hope you'll se, too.
